Beyond Weight Loss: Why the Choices We Make Today Shape the Health We Have Tomorrow

When someone tells me they want to lose weight, I always question… what are they REALLY wanting to gain? Because, in my experience, it’s rarely just about the number on the scales.

Most people want more energy, more confidence, better health and the freedom to enjoy life to the full. Weight loss is often just the thing they think will get them there.

Don’t get me wrong—losing excess body fat can have huge health benefits. But what if the biggest benefit of eating well wasn’t simply looking better… but living better?

What if every balanced meal, every walk, every strength session and every good night’s sleep was an investment in the person you’ll become in 10, 20 or even 30 years’ time?

Because one day, your future self will inherit the choices you make today.

Let me level with you…

I wasn’t always passionate about health. Far from it.

I did the bit of life where you don’t give ‘Future You’ a second thought (apart from maybe the career part). There were plenty of drunk nights out. A LOT of takeaway pizza (often for breakfast the next day too). Ben & Jerry’s. Big bakery cookies….

And exercise? Not at all for me.

I was never the sporty one. If there was a team to be picked in PE, I was generally picked last. Occasionally, second to last, if I got lucky. I couldn’t throw. I couldn’t catch. And I definitely wasn’t going to risk comments on how hopeless I was at running, so I’d walk. I simply believed I wasn’t “that person.”

Then came 'Phase Two'. The dieting phase.

Low carb. Low calorie. Eating less to “balance out” the alcohol calories. Emptying the cupboards on a Sunday night before promising myself I’d be good on Monday. Except after a weekend of sugar, alcohol and very little nourishment, Monday never felt like the fresh start I’d imagined.

I’ve got the photos where I looked bigger. I’ve got the photos where I looked skinny. But neither version of me was truly healthy.

Luckily, then I found 'Phase Three'.

And I honestly believe I’ll stay in this phase for the rest of my life. This isn’t the phase where I’m chasing a number on the scales. It’s the phase where I want to look in the mirror and see someone who’s strong and healthy. More importantly, it’s the phase where I want to feel strong, healthy and full of energy.

It’s the phase where I’m passionate about stacking the odds in my favour. Building habits that support healthy ageing and reduce my risk of problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline.

Can I control everything? Of course not. Genetics matter. Age matters. Life happens.

But I can influence far more than I used to believe. That’s why my motivation isn’t just about looking good in a photo anymore. It’s about stacking the odds in my favour. When I choose nourishing food, build muscle, prioritise sleep, manage stress and stay active, I’m not just thinking about today.

I’m thinking about reducing my risk of conditions like:

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Heart disease

  • Stroke

  • High blood pressure

  • Fatty liver disease

  • Osteoporosis

  • Cognitive decline and dementia

  • Some cancers

Can healthy habits guarantee I’ll never develop any of them? No.

But if I have the opportunity to reduce my risk, why wouldn’t I take it? That’s what motivates me now. Not fear. Not chasing perfection.

Just making choices that give Future Me the best possible chance.

Your Body Is Always Responding

Your body is listening to your daily habits.

Every balanced meal provides building blocks.

  Every walk supports your heart.

Every strength session strengthens muscles and bones.

Every good night’s sleep allows your body to repair and recover.

The opposite is true too. Poor nutrition, inactivity, poor sleep and chronic stress can gradually increase wear and tear over time.

The good news? Your body doesn’t expect perfection. It simply responds to what you do consistently.

The Foundations I Encourage Everyone to Focus On

People often ask me where they should start.

My answer is almost never with calorie counting, restrictive diets, points systems or the latest weight-loss trend.

It starts with getting the fundamentals right.

Eating enough protein to support muscle, strength and recovery.

Eating a wide variety of fibre-rich plant foods to nourish your gut.

Choosing healthy fats rather than fearing them.

Building balanced meals that help support steadier blood sugar levels.

  Drinking enough water.

Prioritising strength training alongside regular movement.

  Getting enough quality sleep.

Finding healthy ways to recover from stress.

None of these habits are glamorous. They won’t make sensational headlines or promise a dramatic transformation overnight.

But when practised consistently, they can have a profound impact on how you look and feel today and on your health in the years ahead.

Why These Habits Matter

When we consistently practise these simple habits, we’re doing much more than helping the number on the scales. We’re supporting healthy blood pressure, blood sugar regulation and cholesterol levels. We’re maintaining muscle and bone strength, looking after our heart, supporting our gut microbiome and helping our brain function. We’re improving our energy, resilience and overall quality of life.

Over many years, these habits are also associated with a lower risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and some cancers.

Researchers are also exploring the fascinating relationship between metabolic health and brain health.

You may have heard Alzheimer’s disease referred to as “Type 3 diabetes”. While this isn’t an official medical diagnosis, it reflects research into how insulin signalling in the brain may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease.

Although much remains to be understood, it reinforces an encouraging message: many of the habits that support our heart and metabolic health may also help support our brain health.

The encouraging part is that none of these foundations require perfection. Small, consistent changes really do add up. Every balanced meal, every walk, every strength session, every good night’s sleep and every positive choice is an investment in your future health.

That’s why my approach has always been about building simple, sustainable habits that fit into real life—not chasing quick fixes that rarely last.

Progress Over Perfection

If there’s one message I’d love you to take away from this article, it’s this:

You don’t need to be perfect to improve your health.

You don’t need to follow a restrictive diet.

You don’t need to exercise every day.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight.

Real, lasting health is built through small, consistent choices that become habits over time.

  Every balanced meal.

  Every walk.

  Every strength session.

  Every good night’s sleep.

They all count.

Why I Do What I Do

Many people come to me because they want to lose weight, and I absolutely love helping people achieve that goal. But I want that weight loss to happen in a way that improves their overall health, rather than compromising it.

For me, it’s never just about seeing a lower number on the scales. It’s about helping people build habits that increase their energy, support their physical and mental wellbeing, strengthen their bodies, and give them the best possible chance of living a long, healthy and fulfilling life.

I want people to feel stronger, more confident and more capable.
To have the energy to enjoy everyday life.
To stay active and independent as they get older.
To protect not only their physical health, but also their long-term brain health.

Because to me, health isn’t simply about adding years to your life—it’s about adding life to your years.
