Escaping the diet mindset...

(*Written at 5.45am is this morning, between weight sets at the gym)


Right now, this morning, I feel incredibly bloated. Low energy. Lowsy.


Why?


Yesterday, I enjoyed a rare day with family and was fed a picnic lunch. Lovely seeing family. Lovely ‘proper’ home cooked ham in the bread rolls. Here’s the thing.


❌ I don’t normally eat bread. Bread for me = tired, low energy and bloated. I’ll explain another day why this could be the same for you.


❌ Butter = dairy = I’m lactose intolerant.


❌ The high processed carbs lunch meant by mid afternoon I was TIRED, and therefore, for a quick fix, had a biscuit = wheat + dairy + refined sugar. None of which are part of my normally nutrition. I’ll again explain another day.


❌ The low energy didn’t recover. I ate extra carbs in the evening to recover from the post carb sugar crash. HEALTHY carbs, but double (skin on jacket + oats). I didn’t really need both. Setting myself on a carb based, blood sugar rollercoaster means lousy today.


These days and moments where things are ‘off plan’ are NOT FAILS. Or NOT OFF TRACK!! They are living real life. I had a lovely day with the family at the zoo. Bloated and tired does NOT mean you have put on weight. It does NOT mean you need to punish yourself through deprivation. It just means focusing back on the stable energy nutrition to get you back to feel good.


It’s what happens next that is key 🔐

THE DIET MINDSET would most likely mean eating nothing this morning. Maybe a coffee. After the carb heavy day yesterday, insulin will have been hard at work, pulling the sugar from your blood to store. As fat. Your blood sugar will be low. Not eating will add to this. Eventually your body will drive you to reach for the quickest release energy you can find. Sugar. To get your blood sugar back up to a safe level. And more. But it goes TOO HIGH. Insulin kicks back into action. To pull the sugar from your blood and store it as fat. And so the diet cycle continues.


THE HEALTHY MINDSET…


Absolutely, there will be days when your eating doesn’t quite align with your energy, weight and health goals.

Here’s what I will do to compensate this morning…


NOTHING!!!


I will eat/act exactly how I eat on a normal day! Which varies, but at the moment is:


🍃5.15am mini protein bowl with 1/2 banana as pre gym (going fasted can spike cortisol)

🍃green tea shot & adaptogens at the gym

🍃weights session (very little cardio for me!)

🍃scrambled eggs (1 whole egg, 2 egg whites) with broccoli, peas and spinach

🍃mid morning snack. I’ve not decided yet..

🍃plenty of water/decaf tea

🍃delicious, filling, choc shake bowl with berries for lunch

🍃mid afternoon snack (something with protein)


We have friends staying from today for a couple of nights, I needed to get a teenager, big-appetite-man plus women-friendly dinner. I’ve gone with:


🍃chicken in breadcrumbs - a compromise. Means some people feel they’re getting the junk food they like, I get some proper chicken breast/protein from it 😉


🍃chips for the man & teenager


🍃lots of veg to cut into sticks, with hummus, guacamole and salsa


🍃always some of my Montezuma 100% dark chocolate!


I KNOW that the diet mindset can be hard to escape. I KNOW that for many of you, getting up and eating when you feel bloated or overindulged from a previous day.

But, I promise this is the way to escape it.
